About This Course
Poetry in America is a high school course that explores the rich and diverse tradition of American poetry from its beginnings to contemporary works. Students will study influential poets and movements, examining how historical, cultural, and social contexts shape poetic expression. Through close reading, analysis, and creative writing, students will deepen their understanding of poetic forms, techniques, and themes. The course encourages students to appreciate the power of poetry as a reflection of American identity and experience. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically engage with and create their own poetry, gaining insight into the art and its relevance today.
You'll learn to:
- Understanding the evolution of American poetry and its reflection of historical and cultural events.
- Learning various poetic forms, structures, and literary devices used by American poets.
- Studying influential American poets and key literary movements, such as the Harlem Renaissance and Beat Generation.
- Developing skills to analyze and interpret themes, symbols, and styles in American poetry.
- Engaging in writing original poems, experimenting with different styles and techniques learned throughout the course.
Choose a Lesson Package
Fourteen hours of one on one private instruction or one complete course. Weekday or weekend appointments with a live instructor onsite at our facility. Once lessons begin, students meet routinely each week on set days and times for one or more hours per week consecutively until the course hours have been completed. Appointments are subject to availability.
